Picos de Europa
Liebana, the area in which the Hotel del Oso is located, is close to the borders with the provinces of Asturias, Leon and Palencia
Here Peña Sagra, the Cordillera Cantabrica and the Picos de Europa rise up to heights of over 2,000 metres. Going up in the Fuente De cable car, 9 km from the Hotel del Oso, you can reach El Cable viewpoint, at a height of 1,847 metres.
The hotel is also near the Santo Toribia de Liébana monastry. As guardian of the religious relic known as the "Lignun Crucis", part of Christ's cross, it is a place of pilgrimage which since the 16th century has shared with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Caravaca de la Cruz the privilege of celebrating a Jubilee Year.
It is internationally famous as the origin of the medieval manuscripts generically called los Beatos de Liebana after their author, the monk Beato, who lived in the monastery.
Near the Hotel del Oso, 14 kilometres away, is the town of Potes, the capital of Liebana. It has a substantial old part with large houses with coats of arms, and bridges and monuments, foremost amongst which is the Torre del Infantado.
